Student Life

Our student community is just one factor that sets us apart from a regular city apartment.

Sure, we save you the hassle of working with a a broker and their pesky hidden fees, scouring the Internet for hours looking for the best deals on your move-in date, and dealing with an M.I.A super... but we also create a home for you and your peers. Our staff hosts a slew of activities at each of the residences as well as around town. That way you can make a friend or dozen, and experience all that the city has to offer without even having to try!

We at EHS beleive you should always feel safe and secure at home. That's why we provide you with 24-hour emergency on call services, and make sure our on-site residence directors are able to give guidance and medical referral if ever needed.

    Christy Gaiti-Chatfield

    Senior Vice President of Student Life

    Christy Gaiti-Chatfield leads EHS's efforts to help residents maximize their New York City experience. Along with her staff Christy designs the countless recreational programs and opportunities for residents to meet one another and explore the wonders of New York safely, conveniently and affordably. Prior to arriving at EHS, Christy was responsible for the Residence Life department and eventually became the Dean of Students at Marymount Manhattan College. She has a Masters Degree in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education from New York University and Bachelor Degrees in both Psychology and Social Work from Widener University.

    Yolanda Cruz

    Director of Student Life

    Yolanda Cruz is in charge of all buildings and around 5,000+ residents. Yolanda is a native of Houston Texas, she received a BS in Psychology from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and she has been with Educational Housing Services since May of 2006. Previously, she was the Residence Director at the St. George/Clark residences for two years, and the Residence Director at the 1760 Third Avenue Residence.  Yolanda also does a lot of 'behind the scenes' work that is vital to EHS. Before joining EHS Yolanda was a Residence Director at Marymount Manhattan College, as well as a Residence Manager at Boston University.

    Maria Giraldo

    Coordinator of Student Life

    Maria Giraldo graduated from Baruch College in 2008 with a BBA in International Marketing and joined EHS in the summer 2007. Since then, she has been involved in every aspect of the Student Life Department. She works closely with everyone upgrading systems, planning activities for all residents, assisting students, and working very close with the Vice President of Student Life to provide support to all residences. Maria coordinates all aspects of the department from events to check-ins, and is the to go person in the department. While her office is in the Clark corporate office, you can find her at all of the EHS residences lending a hand.

    James D. Wojtkiewicz

    James Wojtkiewicz joined the EHS New Yorker staff in August 2011.  As a New Jersey native, James received his Bachelor of Arts in History and Education from Monmouth University where he began his career in student life as a Resident Assistant.  After graduating from Monmouth University, James began his professional career in student life at Drew University as a Complex Residence Director.  During his four and a half years, James obtained his Masters of Letters (Liberal Arts) degree, as well as completed his coursework for his Doctor of Letters (Liberal Arts) degree. James is also a certified teacher for Social Studies in NJ.  James has posted office hours and is part of a 24 hour on-call rotation with other staff members.  James works closely with all of the schools and companies to ensure your stay is a pleasant one. He, along with all the other Residence Directors, works to ensure that each student is living in a secure, successful, and thriving living environment.

    Keri-ann Byers has been with EHS since May of 2008, and was an Resident Advisor for two years with EHS before becoming an Residence Director in the summer of 2010.  She grew up in Middletown, NJ, and graduated from Pace University with a BA degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders.  Keri-ann co-supervises and mentors the RAs at the New Yorker and assists residents around the clock.  Keri-ann resides in the New Yorker and is always available to the residents.

    Taylor Rogers

    Taylor Rogers is a Forensic Psychology major at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is originally from Youngstown, Ohio. Taylor enjoys watching Requiem for Dream and Workaholics while snacking on Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but only after she’s had some Mac and Cheese. Taylor is a big fan of rap & hip hop music, sleeping, recreational reading, spending time outside, soccer, and listening to new music. She may seem like an introvert but she enjoys speaking to large groups of people. Taylor advises that you visit a New York City landmark, try as many kinds of food as you can, and make as many connections as possible.  “With EHS, you have a second family that is always there for you.”

    William Robert Haynes

    Associate Director of Residence Life

    William Robert Haynes, originally from Charleston, AR, joined EHS in the summer of 2012. A graduate from Arkansas Tech University, he earned both a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with emphasis in Management and Marketing and a Master of Science in College Student Personnel. Robert is extremely passionate about the comfort and success of every student living in the EHS St. George residences and works hard to make sure the facilities are enjoyable and all students’ needs are met. Prior to joining EHS, Robert served as a Resident Director at both Union College in Schenectady, NY and William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ.  In his spare time, he enjoys reading in Central Park, catching a show on Broadway, or hitting the tennis courts with friends.

    Brian Harrington

    Administrative Assistant

    Brian graduated from Adelphi University in with a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts Psychology. He joined EHS at the end of 2009 as an Administrative Assistant for the Student Life department and provided support to the St. George Residence assisting the residents of the buildings alongside the RAs and ADs with any issues or questions they may have. He also provided administrative/creative support to the corporate, Leasing and Finance offices. Outside of EHS he enjoys playing music in wedding and community orchestras, and teaching dance at small dance schools in the city.

    Margaret Van-Ess

    Margaret graduated from the University at Albany with a Bachelors of Arts in 2004  and a Masters of Arts in Africana Studies in 2012. She joined EHS in the Spring of 2013 as a Resident Director  for the Marymount summer Residence. In the Fall of 2013, Margaret will co –supervise the RAs at  the 1760 Third Ave residence. She prides herself in great customer service and community development in residence halls. Before joining EHS, Margaret worked as a Graduate Assistant for Residential Life where she supervised 8 paraprofessional staff members. In her spare time, she enjoys working out, reading, and eating out at new restaurants.

    Brendan Mahoney

    Brendan is one of the two Residence Directors in Brooklyn Heights.  Having joined the EHS team in the summer of 2015, he works to foster a strong community throughout the St. George.  Focusing on quality programming and student engagement he aspires to have 55 Clark St. and Brooklyn Heights truly feel like home for all residents.  Before EHS Brendan worked at Stony Brook University as a Residence Hall Director.  He graduated from the University of Virginia with his B.A. in Economics and M.Ed. in Higher Education, Student Affairs Practice.  Originally from the D.C. Metro Area, and living on Long Island before coming to work at EHS, Brendan spent most of his free time commuting to the city to visit friends, go to shows, and explore.  He is thrilled to have access to all of the city now just moments from his doorstep!

    Valerie is from Commack, NY and is currently a Finance and Investments major at Baruch College's Macaulay Honors College. Valerie enjoys watching the Big Bang Theory on TV to unwind, as well as singing along to her favorite movie, The Sound of Music. When she's not enjoying her favorite food -- pizza -- Valerie likes to indulge her sweet tooth with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. When Valerie isn’t working in the Student Life Office, she is writing, baking, or practicing her dance moves. Valerie’s NYC bucket list includes: riding the tram to Roosevelt Island, developing her leadership and interpersonal skills, exploring different restaurants and foods, and trying just about everything! Valerie’s favorite thing about EHS is how helpful and kind the staff is.

    Valerie Auciello

    Valerie is from Holtsville, NY and is currently studying Marketing at Baruch College. She is a huge fan of the show Gossip Girl and spends her time listening to songs by John Mayer, such as "Gravity." Val is also very into pop music. Some of her favorite dishes include Spaghetti and Chicken Parm. Val’s sweet tooth woes are usually cured by dark chocolate and Hershey's chocolate bars with almonds. When she's not at work and school, she enjoys running, baking, and making homemade gifts (especially scrapbooks). Val has also competed at the national level for a really unusual sport called Race Walk. Curious to know more about it? Ask Val and she'd love to tell you. This summer Val plans to take a "food tour" of the Greenwich Village,  take a stroll in Central Park, and just explore more of NYC! Val states that “when you have free time, it's great getting lost in the city and finding little cafés and new places along the way. EHS is close to amazing locations right here in the city, making it easy to explore."

    Evan MacManus hails from St. Peters, Missouri and attends Hunter College. He is currently studying Anthropology and Psychology, and enjoys singing in the school A Cappella group Hawkapella. His first trip to New York City was with his high school chorus group where he performed at Carnegie Hall. Evan hopes to be fluent in Spanish by the end of summer. He also hopes to visit Montauk for the picture-perfect beach scene. For residents, he recommends exploring the many different cultures in the diverse boroughs.

    Hailing from Cinnaminson, NJ, Marcela is a freshman Marketing major at Baruch College. In her free time, she enjoys listening to and discovering new indie rock & alternative music, watching her favorite movie “The Aviator”, a good steak, crafts, baking, finding great deals, and stumbling upon quirky and different things while exploring New York City (lucky for residents, she is great at finding out about free food, concerts, and events!). She recommends that residents take advantage of everything they can, even if they are on a limited budget, because there is always something free to do and something new to learn. One of her favorite things about living with EHS is the events because “they allow people to meet each other in a city that can otherwise feel lonely... personally, I have met some of my closest friends  at EHS events!”

    Melanie Rista is studying Psychology at Hunter College and comes to EHS from Woodbridge, NJ. Melanie’s favorite thing to do in NYC is find new and exciting coffee shops or spending time at museums. When she’s not discovering more of NYC, Melanie can be found running outside or relaxing inside watching Law and Order, SVU. Melanie is currently training for a 10k and ½ marathon, so she will definitely need some running buddies. She loves that EHS is a place where you can meet people from different schools and from all across the world. Her advice, “make the best of your time here. There’s always something to do; you’ll never have a reason to say you’re bored.” Oh and don’t forget to ask her about her blog.

    Michael Garcia

    Mike Garcia is currently enrolled at Marymount Manhattan College where he is studying Communication Arts. Mike is originally from Wantagh, NY and enjoys watching his favorite movies, The End & American Horror Story. Mike’s musical choices include anything that’s indie, pop, EMD; he especially loves the song "Royals" by Lorde. You may find Mike satisfying his appetite at Chipotle and snacking on Sour Patch Kids. Some of Mike’s ways to pass his free time is by taking walks through the city and parks, reading, and trying different restaurants and cuisines. Mike also has quite the adventurous side to him. He’s been skydiving, scuba diving in a shark cage, rock climbing and kayaking. Mike enjoys meeting interesting people from all over the world and making life time connections. Mike’s suggestion to you is to definitely try and make the most out of every day while you can. New York is such a great place; you just have to keep on going and you'll see how beautiful New York truly is. One of his favorite aspects of living at EHS is the location: “I love how convenient the location is -- the subway is directly under my building! I don't think you can get any closer than that!”

    Austin Provancher is studying Finance at Pace University. He is in his second year at Pace but has been in the Army for six years. His love for New York has grown through getting to know different people from all over the world. Austin appreciates that there are so many diverse cultures in one city. A good book and a good dinner are all he needs to enjoy himself. He finds running and Crossfit to be among the best ways to stay in shape!

    Mason Sullivan is studying acting at the Actor's Studio Drama School at Pace University. Originally from Lexington, Tennessee, he loves the sense of home and friendliness from the staff at EHS. He is an avid gym and health food guru, and enjoys all recreational sports; however, soccer is his favorite. Mason loves seeing all of the parts of the city as a way to relax after long, stressful days in his program. He enjoys wandering the city because he is able to strike up a conversation with random people wherever he goes.

    Ross Cooper is currently studying International Business at Baruch College and is originally from San Diego, California. Ross enjoys eating pasta followed by his favorite candy bar, Three Musketeers.  The Sopranos is one TV show that Ross could watch over and over again. In between The Sopranos, Ross likes to watch the movie Inglorious Bastards. Ross also produces, writes, and records his own original music. He learned to play guitar and piano, and is also a singer. When he’s not in classes or in the studio, he enjoys going to the gym, hanging out in the city, eating, sleeping, and practicing his juggling. Ross aspires to learn how to work out properly as well as taking his music production skills to the next level. In NYC, Ross’s favorite thing to do is hang out in a coffee shop in the Village or on the Upper West Side on a rainy day and watch people go by, while writing down lyrics or just relaxing. “I would recommend checking out the famous Halal stand of 53rd St. on the West Side - the Halal there is not only way better quality than the average run of the mill Halal stands in the city but is priced cheaper as well.”

    Rachel Borka is a Graduate student at the Actor's Studio Drama School. Her favorite foods include sushi and dark chocolate. Rachel enjoys running, cycling, hiking and any other activity spent outside! Her undergraduate days included Track & Field but this summer she is going to focus on learning how to crochet. Central Park and Chelsea Market are among her favorite NYC landmarks.

    Cassie Rocha is a junior at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where she is majoring in Culture and Deviance Studies. This fraternal twin (her sister’s name is Jessie) comes to NYC from Simsbury, Connecticut and enjoys watching House Hunters on TV or her favorite movie, Pirates of the Caribbean. When she’s not working or in school, Cassie enjoys going to concerts and spending time outdoors. If she needs something to appease her appetite, potato salad and a Milky Way seem to do the trick. Cassie is soon going to begin her studies of the German language, which she is really excited about. If you can speak German, she’ll be glad to have someone to practice with.  NYC is a great place to be, but Cassie advises to also explore outside of the city when possible... such as taking a weekend trip to Vermont to enjoy the fall foliage and go hiking! She also recommends walking the Brooklyn Heights promenade or Highline Park. Cassie’s favorite thing about EHS is how it manages to make huge residential buildings feel so homey!

    Michael Holler is currently pursuing Business and Communications in Art and Film at St. Francis College. Michael comes to NYC from Kaneohe, Hawaii and enjoys a wide array of music, but especially the song "One More Time" by Daft Punk.   Michael also enjoys watching The Empire Strikes Back and Doctor Who to unwind. When he has spare time he usually spends it socializing with friends either in the EHS lobby, eating Rocky Road Ice cream, or out exploring the city.  He also assists with different film projects for small independent films, as well as film projects at The New York Film Academy. While living in New York, Michael definitely recommends visiting the DUMBO Flea market, walking around Central Park, visiting the 9/11 Memorial Site, going to one of the Jazz Clubs offered in NYC, having a classic English

    Dominic Testino is a Criminal Justice and Criminology major at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is a native New Yorker from Centereach, Long Island. Dominic’s favorite movie is The Dark Knight and he loves watching Breaking Bad on TV. Dominic has a very inclusive music playlist but his favorite song is "In My Pocket" by The Cat Empire. Italian cuisine is one of Dominic’s favorite meals and he has a sweet tooth for Haribo Gummy Bears. His hobbies include reading, listening/creating music, going to concerts/ shows, playing videos games, exercise and studying. He is also a musician has been playing guitar for two years and trumpet for twelve years. Occasionally Dominic is hired by a "Merengue" artist as a lead trumpet player and plays gigs throughout the tri-state area and even Washington, D.C.  Dominic advises you to take advantage of the free local and EHS events! Nearly every day in the summer, especially on weekends, there are many opportunities to experience what NYC has to offer at little to no charge. Living in the EHS community has allowed him the opportunity to make friends and enjoy the feeling of independence.

    Maurice A. Smith has been an Resident Advisor and Director for many years before joining EHS in March of 2015. A native of Philadelphia PA, Maurice holds both a BFA and MBA degrees from Marymount Manhattan College. After spending several years in Los Angeles,CA, Maurice is excited to be back in NYC and is ready to ensure with the help of Keri-ann  Byers and the RAs, all of  the residents of  the New Yorker Residence are provided a world class experience.

    Jeremy Renner may share his name with the famous actor from the movie “Hurt Locker” but he has yet to win an Oscar. While he studies Computer Information Systems, his interests include film, photography, as well as drawing. His passion for skateboarding has taken him to all five boroughs even before he moved to the city. Jeremy hopes to continue exploring the city, finding new food, and attending more concerts this summer.

    Mike Stiefel is a lover of knowledge and a student of Criminology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In his spare time, he favors all genres of music and volunteering at the Philippine Consulate General. He loves to explore, whether it be the woods of his hometown in Connecticut or the sidewalks of New York City. He enjoys walking to campus and taking new paths to discover new favorites along the way. He suggests new residents do the same to get the most out of their home away from home.

    Madeleine Boland enjoys reading, vintage shopping, and exploring new places around the city. She is studying Merchandising at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She wishes to sharpen her Italian this summer as well as take in another Broadway show. Madeleine loves to explore the city and recommends that you check out the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her favorite part about EHS is that everyone is so friendly and it feels like home; living with EHS has been one of the best experiences of her life.

    Elizabeth Gottsegen is a Graduate student at Teachers College through Columbia University studying International Educational Development. Hailing from Belchertown, Massachusetts, Liza loves Disney movies and watching Netflix series. Her musical choice includes a lot of tunes by Dave Matthews Band. To appease her appetite, Liza enjoys anything Peruvian or Italian. When she has the chance, she takes to the outdoors for a nice hike, run or long stroll. Liza is interested in learning a new language soon, so if you have suggestions, send them her way. She suggests that while in NYC, take a walk along the Brooklyn Bridge and don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.
