My First Foray Into a Semi-Independent LifeRead what a 2007 summer resident of the St. George Residence had to say about her experience in NYC and her stay with EHS!My First Foray Into A Semi-Independent (Ha!) Life In The Big Apple City.Sat, 06/02/2007 - 21:57 Whitney - edited by A.M.Moments after my parents rolled away from the curb of the beautiful St. George Residence, I’ve already made my first New York acquaintance. Justin, a student from University of Pennsylvania, and I bonded in the elevator. He lives on my floor and has moved in for a marketing internship. We’ve promised to swing by each others rooms later tonight, I hope he said 632! But let me back up, because if I'm going to attempt to blog my summer, I should do it as completely as possible. Survive Days One and Two: CheckMon, 06/04/2007 - 21:07 Whitney - edited by A.M.Remember how I said I wasn't going back to Heights Cafe? Well, that was a lie. On Saturday night I ended up there for a late dinner with Janet from Morgan Stanley, Mary from Goldman Sachs, and Liz from Victoria's Secret. My First Day of Work!Wed, 06/06/2007 - 02:48 Whitney - edited by A.M.This morning I woke up and stumbled into the shower at 9:00 am. It was disgustingly early for the girl who gets up the entire school year between 10:30 and 11:45am. But the early wake up call was compounded not only by 613's stunning lack of blinds (and bright Brooklyn sun) but also by my room mate Trischa coming home at 6:30am and then proceeding to talk loudly on the phone in the bed 5 feet away from me. It was the second morning in a row that she'd done this (although yesterday when I didn't have to get up, it was at 7:30 rather than 6:30). Anyways, I got up, dressed, and out the door in only a little over an hour. I decided to try to find a new place to eat for lunch today...Wed, 06/06/2007 - 20:56 Whitney - edited by A.M.I decided to try to find a new place to eat for lunch today. My restaurant criteria were outdoor seating in a casual atmosphere where lunch was less than $8. I ended up walking up and down the nearby street and discovering a tiny shop that served Vietnamese sandwiches and bubble tea, a gourmet pet food store, and this crazy restaurant called "Robin De Bois" (trans: Robin of Wood) which had a hip-high statue outside of the door. I'm not quite sure what a dwarf-sized bright red Michelin Man has to do with a Robin Hood, but clearly it must be something. But I couldn't figure out where I wanted to eat. I Swear, It's A ConspiracyFri, 06/08/2007 - 05:00 Whitney - edited by A.M.I only work three days a week and was psyched to be able to sleep in today. I figured Trischa would come in from her evening events somewhere between 5 am and 8 am per usual. But, it would be fine; and after the interruption I could go back to sleep until a more reasonable hour. When I was woken up by a knock on the door I just leaned precariously out of bed and unlocked it. Truth be told, I was back in bed with my eyes closed before she even entered the room. Riding the subway at night...Sun, 06/10/2007 - 05:00 Whitney - edited by A.M.To New York natives, and even locals, the screeching of the subway, the jolting of the car, and the flickering lights, are all just part of the normal train experience. And if New Yorkers were to ever be alarmed by -- rather than their typical response of aloofly disdainful of -- their surroundings, then surely the trains' behaviors wouldn't be the cause of a change of heart pace. But I'm from the suburbs and for the amount that I ride the T back home, I might as well be from the boonies of a truly small town, not just the boonies of Lex. So with each screech, jolt, and flicker, my hand tightened around the metal bar as though if I could just hold on tight enough, I'd survive whatever the New York Transit System had in store for me. Brooklyn Bridge, The Bodies, World Trade Center memorialWed, 06/13/2007 - 05:00 Whitney - edited by A.M.Tonight there’s a free opera in a park somewhere...maybe its Central Park, maybe it's not...or I could go on a sunset walk over the Brooklyn Bridge with EHS. I know you must be thinking "but she can't be doing anything with her evenings, she hasn't updated since Saturday!" But, Dear Reader, that is not the case. On Sunday I went to see The Bodies Exhibit with EHS. It was just as interesting as everyone said it was. Honestly, I had never thought about the way that for example, arteries looked. Nor did I know that the veins around the lungs looked like a coral reef. It was mind blowingly cool. Three Days of Updates Equals One Long Entry!Sun, 06/17/2007 - 05:00 Whitney - edited by A.M.Thursday: On Thursday I hung out with Lauren and Tom, didn't do my laundry, and we ended up downstairs in the beautiful Clark lounge at midnight beginning to watch the chick flick Practical Magic on my laptop. "I'm totally top forty for this band!" - Lauren T about...was it Panic At The Disco??Tue, 06/19/2007 - 05:00 Whitney - edited by A.M.Today I gave my first New York City directions!! I know it sounds dumb but it was the high-high-highlight of my day. Somehow over the last few days I made the difficult transition from tourist to...whatever is slightly less touristy without being born and raised here - I'd vote a "New York transplant." My Life In Quick ReviewTue, 06/26/2007 - 05:00 Whitney - edited by A.M.On Thursday my friend Meagan M came to visit with her friend Rachel and Lauren T joined the three of us to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and visit the International Center for Photography. |
