My First Foray Into A Semi-Independent (Ha!) Life In The Big Apple City.Sat, 06/02/2007 - 17:57 Whitney - edited by A.M.Moments after my parents rolled away from the curb of the beautiful St. George Residence, I’ve already made my first New York acquaintance. Justin, a student from University of Pennsylvania, and I bonded in the elevator. He lives on my floor and has moved in for a marketing internship. We’ve promised to swing by each others rooms later tonight, I hope he said 632! But let me back up, because if I'm going to attempt to blog my summer, I should do it as completely as possible. We made our way down to Brooklyn Heights, the beautiful St. George Hotel. Although parking was a chore, we finally made it inside to the St. George lobby where my parents ohh-ed and ahh-ed over the decor and I checked into my new summer home. I was surprised to find out that the girl who checked me into my room for the summer was the cousin of a girl who I took French classes with in High School. We moved my ridiculous amount of stuff into my new room and were surprised to find that despite what the admissions girl had said, my future roommate had not only already shown up, she was completely moved in! However despite her clothes and belonging being here, she was not in the room. Four hours later and she still hasn't shown up. But she can be heinous for all I care, the view from this room makes up for everything! I look out my window and can clearly see the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building. There’s also a meter just to the left of the bridge that shows the time and the temperature. It's true convenience! We walked down to Montague St. and ate lunch on the outside patio of The Heights Café. Although the food was good, I doubt I (on my “don’t got a real job so I’ma be broke” budget) will be going there again soon. Over lunch my father and I figured out that I am going to attempt to live on a budget of $15. To get me started, they bought me groceries (eggs, turkey, and some precut veggies) and some disposable dishes. I have a mini-sauce pan and if I want to be able to afford this summer, well lets just say I doubt I’ll be craving omelets when I get back to Hartford! After lunch we took the twenty minute walk down to my internship company, Romantic Times Book Review Magazine. After that, the three of us walked back up to St. George. Here we did some errands, finished setting up my room, and I said goodbye to my parents. As I walked back in, I heard a nice boy talking to the friendly door man, whose name is Alfred. I made friends with the aforementioned nice boy in the elevator. His name is Justin. Is this starting to sound familiar? Now all I have left to do is post this and then I'm off. I have to put the finishing touches on my bedroom, do the room evaluation, get my keys, and explore the residence a little bit. |
