2012 Resident Highlights

Winter

2012

Check out what’s going on with your fellow residents!

New Yorker Residence – Laura Ruiz

My name is Laura Ruiz and I am a freshman at Hunter College majoring in Accounting. My family is Colombian so my first language was Spanish (something in which I plan to minor in). I’m originally from Queens, NY but I moved upstate about an hour and a half from here, when I was about six. I’ve always been a city girl at heart so I knew that NYC was the best place for me to go to school, and when I found EHS there was no turning it down. Moving here to New York City was a drastic change coming from a small town but it has been an amazing experience for me and has opened me up to so many incredible opportunities. I’m a very outgoing girl with a big personality who leads a crazy, busy life here. Between going to school full time and having a full time job, I like to think that I manage the two very well.   I’m a firm believer in setting goals and doing everything you can to accomplish them. As my New Year’s resolution I plan on saving enough money to go Colombia to do missionary work for a month. I hear missionary trips can be dangerous but also one of the most fulfilling things anyone can undertake so I’m up for the challenge. Anyone have any interesting resolutions for 2012? If you do, I hope you guy’s work hard to achieve your goals and in turn have an amazing year!!

1760 Third Avenue Residence – Kelley Gottschall

My name is Kelley Gottschall and I am a currently enrolled in my second year at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. My major is English, focusing on writing. I love movies, particularly horror or psychological thrillers, and I hope to one day write my own. I love living the 1760 Third Avenue Residence and meeting new people every day. The RAs and residents are all really friendly, and help make the dorm feel like home. I also like that there are six elevators, as opposed to most residences, EHS or not, that only have two, so waiting for an elevator is never too long. EHS offers many NYC experiences, and I've been lucky enough to take advantage of their discounted movie tickets, tickets to the NYC Chocolate Convention, and a free subscription to internships.com. My experience at EHS has been a positive one, from the first day I moved in, through Halloween and midterms, and up until a crazy week studying for finals. I look forward to the holidays, and returning for the Spring 2012 semester.

Living in the residence has helped me come up with a few New Year's Resolutions:

  1. Aim for A's in all my Spring 2012 semester classes, and again in the Fall 2012 semester, but not to be disappointed with myself if I try my hardest and come out with a B.
  2. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and don't be too proud to accept it when it's offered.
  3. Plan out my homework assignments/manage my time better.
  4. Be more courteous to others' beliefs/feelings.
  5. Listen twice as much as I speak.
  6. One good deed/day, averaged out throughout the semester.
  7. Manage my money better.

St. George Residence – William Gentile

My name is William Gentile and I am a resident at the St. George Residence. I am a film student originally from Washington D.C. attending Pace University. Thanks to the quick thinking of Residence Director Samantha I am still here as I went to the hospital with heart palpitations and found out that I had a pre-existing heart condition. I am happy to be here in New York City and chasing my dream of becoming a great filmmaker.  In the meantime, recognizing I had a strong passion for movies the great people at EHS appointed me the President of the St. George Film Committee which I am extremely proud to be a part of. If you have any movies that you would like to see at the St. George Residence this spring let me know. Also don’t forget to vote for the movies that you would like to play during the month on the St. George Facebook Group. Thank you EHS for making my New York City experience possible!!
