EHS Announces Renovations at 55 John Street Residence in NYC’s Financial District
Educational Housing Services (EHS) is continuing its investment in the student experience at the EHS 55 John Street Residence with plans for newly renovated kitchen and dining spaces designed to encourage connection, comfort, and community among residents. The updated spaces are part of EHS’s broader long-term vision for the residence as it transitions from a summer-only building to a year-round student housing residence beginning in Fall 2026.
Located in the heart of New York City’s Financial District, the EHS 55 John Street Residence provides all-inclusive student and intern housing with convenient access to downtown colleges, internship opportunities, and major subway lines.
The planned renovation project was designed by Wid Chapman Architects, an award-winning New York-based architecture and interior design firm known for its work across hospitality, residential, education, and lifestyle-focused spaces. The firm’s projects have been featured in publications including Architectural Digest, Interior Design, and Boutique Design magazine, and Wid Chapman has received recognition through the International Hotel & Property Awards for its innovative interior and hospitality design work.
Wid Chapman Architects also led the successful renovation of the EHS 55 John Street ground floor lounge and lobby in 2023, helping establish the modern, welcoming aesthetic that is now informing future planned enhancements to the residence’s communal kitchen and dining areas.
Planned future renovations will focus on transforming shared kitchen and dining areas into gathering spaces that support both everyday living and social interaction. Renderings of the redesigned interiors showcase communal kitchens featuring natural wood cabinetry, stone-inspired countertops, geometric tile backsplashes in warm peach tones, and softly lit seating nooks designed for casual conversation and shared meals.
The renovated kitchens were thoughtfully designed with interaction in mind. Long communal layouts, open walkways, and integrated seating areas aim to encourage residents to cook, dine, and connect together. The designs also prioritize warmth and lighting, with the inviting spaces intended to create an energizing and comfortable environment for students balancing busy academic and internship schedules in New York City.
Renderings of the dining and lounge areas feature comfortable seating, café-style tables, layered lighting, and calming green and blue tones throughout the space. Globe pendant lights and patterned upholstery contribute to an atmosphere that feels both modern and relaxed.
The planned renovated spaces complement the residence’s existing amenities, which include fully furnished room options, private bathrooms, community lounges, ongoing Student Life programming, 24/7 security, on-site laundry and fitness facilities, and live-in professional staff.
